Arklow, St. Colmcilles, Pipe Band, was formed in 1941 after a meeting in Mc Gowans Hall, Arklow on 3rd April 1941. William Kavanagh, Rory O Connor place was elected President, Mr. Geo Hagen, Upper Main Street was Treasurer and Committee members were, Michael Wolohan, Mellows Avenue, Harry Fleckney, Connolly Street and Sean Carty, Wexford Road.
To raise funds, dances were held in McGowans hall and it was not until 1945 that the band got their first uniform which was made from a bale of material purchased from Avoca Handweavers for £87. The first parade in the new outfits was a big occasion and the band made a big impression as it played through the streets of Arklow.
That uniform remained with the band for the next thirty-two years, up to the World Championships in Glasgow in 1977 in which the band were placed 4th in Grade 4.. So impressed were the band members by the turnout of bands that it was decided to purchase a Scottish Full Battle Dress. The old uniform had had its day and was just worn out. The Battle Dress looked very impressive and was made by Kintail of Glasgow. It seemed very practical at the time but after four to five years it was decided to discard the shawl, Belts and Spatts and don the Evening wear uniform, which is a lot more comfortable.
The band returned to Glosgow in 1993 and were placed 2nd with the Drummers being placed 1st in the world championships in Grade 4.The same year the band won all major Championships in Northern and Southern Ireland including the Ulster and All Ireland Championships.
The band were upgraded to Grade 3 the following year and unbelively, won the All Ireland Championships once again.
